Compromise of 1877

AP US History Even though compromises and agreements look straight forward, the parties involved usually have ulterior motives. The Compromise of 1877 was consisted of a few main point. It called for the withdrawal of all federal troops from the South, supported internal improvements in the South and promised to appoint at least one Southerner to the cabinet. Also it gave conservative Southern Democrats some control over their local patronage and gave the South a free hand in race relations. Many may have seen these details as a way to mend the country back together, however it was really just a despicable plan.Although the Compromise of 1877 was successful in burying sectional tensions, in reality, it was a cynical political deal because it was a fraudulent election, white conservatives maintained power, and blacks became disenfranchised. During the election of 1876, political improprieties between Tilden and Hayes caused tensions between the two parties. The Republicans thought the y could once again use the tactic and political stand of â€Å"waving the bloody shirt,† which had secured their victories for the past two presidential elections.Unfortunately for the Republicans, American voters had forgotten the Civil War already, and Tilden won the popular vote over Hayes and led the electoral vote 184 to 165. The winner was not decided yet because 20 votes were disputed by the Republican governments in South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana. Resulting from the miscommunication and corruption on both sides of the ticket, Congress had to form a special commission comprised of 5 members from the Senate, House, and Supreme Court. It was decided that exactly seven Democrats, seven Republicans, and one Independent would be allowed, to keep the commission neutral. The Republicans, desperate for a win, devised a plan to have the only independent justice on the bench elected into the Senate by his state’s legislature. When he resigned to assume his new posi tion, all of the remaining justices were Republicans. The vote came in with the Republican’s winning by one vote, meaning all 20 remaining electoral votes were given to Hayes. This scheme cause turmoil between citizens, and it proved that the government would do whatever it could to get what they wanted, even if it meant a scam. Also, the Compromise of 1877 was just a way for white, male conservatives to stay in power. By writing this Compromise, these powerful, WASP men were able to get what they wanted in addition to satisfying the needs of the other party. After all was said and done, the Republicans received the White House, and in return, the Democrats were awarded a spot in Hayes’ cabinet and the removal of federal troops from the south. With both parties temporarily happy, they silently agreed to ignore the rising problem of southern blacks. Both parties sacrificed blacks as they challenged the racial system. The ability for the white conservatives to maintain pow er while manipulating the political system demonstrates that this election was another derisive move by conservatives. Finally, with the Compromise, the blacks became disenfranchised. After the Democrats failed to fight for the rights of the blacks, they were just left out in the dust. The government implemented literacy requirements and poll taxes so that they could prevent them from voting. They also developed the system of tenant farming and share cropping, which significantly decreased their salary and they plunged into economic poverty. They introduced legal systems of racial segregation and it made living for these people harsh, cruel, and near impossible. Finally, there was a significant rise of mob lynchings. This was due to the blacks who decided to challenge the racial system. All of these examples show how the blacks were put down in order to keep them out of the way, and they just became another ordeal in the political deal.In conclusion, the Compromise of 1877 was a cyni cal political deal and was unsuccessful in burying sectional tensions. Between the election fraud, the stronghold of conservatives maintaining power, and the blacks being sunk down back to the bottom, the Compromise was a negative for the country all in all. Many thought it was a positive and could mend us back together, but we eventually found its faults. â€Å"After nearly four months of angry uncertainty, filled with blatant fraud, violence, and fears of renewed civil war, the nation finally†¦ (Morris Jr. 15)† found its ulterior motive and tricked a nation.

Moral Responsibility

Naina Navni Professor Adams UCWR 110 21 October 2010 Moral Responsibility America would not be where it is without the laws that have been placed and the citizens who follow the laws. In order for this to happen the knowledge and acceptance of the laws are needed to establish order. African Americans had been secluded in the past through harsh laws of segregation.Although many believe disobeying the law is morally wrong and if disobeyed a punishment should follow, Martin Luther King’s profound statement, â€Å"One has the moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws† (King 420) leads to greater justice for all which is also supported by King’s â€Å"Letter from Birmingham Jail,† Jefferson’s â€Å" The Declaration of Independence,† and Lincoln’s â€Å"Second Inaugural Address. † â€Å"I am in Birmingham because injustice is here,† wrote Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , in his â€Å"Letter from Birmingham Jail† (King 416 ).Eight Alabama clergymen composed a statement urging restraint in the Civil Rights movement and the discontinuance of demonstrations in Birmingham. The clergymen explained that progress could best be achieved through negotiation and through the court system and suggested that direct action would only make the situation worse. In response to this statement, Martin Luther King, Jr. composed his famous â€Å"Letter from Birmingham Jail† to explain why he was active in civil rights demonstrations, primarily because of the failure of the courts and negotiation to address the issue of civil rights effectively. One of King's most important and most extended arguments begins with the  distinction between just and unjust laws. He begins by stating one has a legal and a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. â€Å"I would agree with St. Augustine that an unjust law is no law at all† (King 420). A distinction i s made that an unjust law is a human law that is not rooted in eternal law and natural law and by contrast, any law that uplifts human personality is just.Through these definition King can elaborate on his claim he developed earlier, â€Å"Segregation distorts the soul and damages the personality,† to draw a central conclusion which condemns segregation statutes as unjust (King 420). Any law that degrades human personality is unjust and all segregation statutes are unjust because segregation distorts the soul and damages the personality. Therefore this supports his conclusion, â€Å"Segregation gives the segregator a false sense of superiority and the segregated a false sense of inferiority† (King 420).Segregation is morally wrong and sinful, therefore action was needed to be taken to prevent it. In the second phase of this argument, King redefines â€Å"unjust law† in such a way as to intersect the democratic argument seen developed in Jefferson’s Declar ation of Independence. King begins his argument by stating what defines an unjust versus just law. â€Å"An unjust law is a code that a numerical or power majority group compels a minority group to obey but does not make binding on itself. This is difference made legal . . . a just law is a code that a majority compels a minority to follow and that it is willing to follow itself. This is sameness made legal . . . a law is unjust if it is inflicted on a minority that, as a result of being denied the right to vote, had no part in enacting or devising the law† (King 421). The segregation laws were enacted by the Alabama legislature, representatives to which Negroes did not vote for because they were denied the right to vote brings up a question â€Å"Can any law enacted under such circumstances be considered democratically structured? † (King 421). Such laws are not democratically structured, therefore such laws are unjust. After King clearly demonstrated that segregation l aws are unjust, it follows the immediate opening premise, â€Å"One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws† that we are obliged to disobey segregation laws (King 420). King shines a new light on the disobedience of the law by expressing his belief that â€Å"An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law† (King 421).This therefore means that conscientious disobedience of an unjust law, especially with the intention of overturning injustice, shows the highest respect for the law, where just law is supposed to derive from natural law and God's moral order. King's language here echoes Jefferson, but particularly in the Declaration of Independence where Jefferson argues that governments exist to protect basic human rights, â€Å"Deriving their just powers from t he consent of the governed† (Jefferson 437).At time it appears that the letter might even surpass the Declaration of Independence in its importance and value, as the letter speaks on behalf of all Americans as a unified â€Å"we† (Ess). Lincoln’s famous â€Å"Second Inaugural Address† given in 1865, exemplifies what King tries to explain in his letter. The main message gained is that all men are created equal, therefore segregation laws should not exist (Ess). Lincoln’s speech laid the foundation for others, such as King, to continue to work hard to abolish segregation and discriminative treatment.King’s use of logos, appeals to our logic or reasoning and gives his own example of how segregation affected his life. Once, he was randomly arrested for walking around without a walking permit. Another example, an elderly black woman states, â€Å"My feets is tired but my soul is at rest† (King 430). He mentions that the old woman’s s tatement is grammatically incorrect, and emphasizes her lack of education and his awareness of it. He draws attention to this fact to point out that even the uneducated know and sense the magnitude of the injustice of segregation. Also, in quoting this elderly woman, King's appeal includes an appeal to the emotions. His use of imagery of this elderly woman with tired feet, we feel for her in that she is old and must endure this march to fight for something she should already have. The laws denied the rights of the elderly woman because of her race, hence the law being unjust, which King believes is fair not to follow. The main problem that was occurring in society was segregation. Similarities between King’s letter to the â€Å"The Declaration of Independence† and â€Å"Second Inaugural Address† are visible as both documents strive for the same goal: equality. If a law is morally wrong and unjust, then it is our responsibility to disobey it. King argues his point in a variety of ways, particularly the example of the elderly black woman complaining about the pain in her feet from the march and how King points out the grammatical errors in her speech which show her lack of education, yet still understands that segregation happening, knows it is wrong, and wants it to end.Works Cited Danner, Natalie, and Mary Kate. Interviews and Standards Investigation - Essay Example However, I don’t use them to directly dictate notes for students. Is social studies applicable to the learning and development of first graders? Why? Response: Yes, it is extremely applicable to learning and development of first graders. This is because it gives children gain lots of knowledge concerning their nation as well as their general social life. What methods of teaching do you use? These methods include; use of questions and answers, lecturing, demonstration, discussion and field trips. How many hours should social be studies taught on a weekly basis? Response: According to the social studies standards, the time allocation for 1st grade is 120 minutes per week. Therefore, I follow the standards to the latter, and my weekly lessons are 120 minutes. What teaching aids do you use? Response: I normally use teaching aids such as cha rts and models. For example, models of the globe and dioramas showing some features on the earth. After how long do you assess the pupils? Response: My students are assessed after every topic. However, at the closing stages of every lesson we normally conduct a question-and-answer session to ensure that all students have understood the concept taught. How do you help weak students in the subject? Response: With the help of bright and exceptionally gifted students, I have developed a program set outside the normal class routine. In this program, they are given learning aids to help them understand the subject better. Furthermore, while teaching them, I usually start with simpler concepts before proceeding to complex ones. In this case, they will understand and appreciate the subject. Standards Essay Social Studies denote an integrated study of humanities and social sciences with the aim of promoting civic competence. The major topics of study that have been paid attention to in the 1 st grade Social Studies program are; The Family, Clothing, Shelter, Food as a Basic Need and Proud to Be American. There is thoroughness in the setting of the curriculum. These standards have gone thorough details to ensure that the children in the first grade learn a lot at the end of each topic (Adler, Dougan & Garcia, 2006). Every standard has the objective of making sure that all concepts are understood to depth, and the difficulty level of the concept matches the grade level. The social studies curriculum standards have provided a structure in planning what should be taught in the social studies program not only for the 1st grade but also starting from kindergarten to the 12th grade. This structure provides themes in which students learn about the general human experience in the world. Students are educated to and prepared for the challenges that citizens face in a democratic nation (Adler et al 2006). The standard is organized in a manner that it has time allotments for differ ent grade levels. For the 1st grade social studies, 120 minutes per week have been set for teaching the subject. This helps the teachers to plan and program themselves so as to achieve their goals in time. It ensures that enough time is spent on all tasks to avoid time wasting and over indulgence in one specific area. There is clarity on what a teacher should teach about social studies in first grade the appropriate teaching aids used in the respective subjects. For

During his exploration, Columbus sailed to different locations including the west across the Atlantic Ocean. He had difficulty obtaining support for his plan because European thought the Earth was flat. Columbus’ first journey and discovery were a remarkable event in world history because of its extensive importance. Columbus discovery of the Indies expanded knowledge of the sea and trade routes. His discovery of the wealth in Indies initiated success for most European countries such as Spain in trade and other commercial activities. In addition, Columbus’ discovery motivated other explorers to embark on other voyages that marked the Era of Discovery. New opportunities for commerce were developed for European. Gay adoption Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Gay adoption - Essay Example †). This limited scope of adoption is contrary to the legal rights that the validity of gay marriage protects. If the couple find themselves free to openly love one another, why are the laws of the land preventing them from doing what comes naturally to a married couple? That of starting a family. Admittedly, same sex couples are not biologically capable of impregnating one or the other in order to achieve a naturally formed family. We also must admit that as a society there are still millions of children housed in adoption institutions or foster care systems looking for a good home. Good homes are hard to find these days, even with heterosexual couples. So why not give the same sex couples a try? Why not allow them to adopt a child and prove that they too can be exemplary parents to their children, even though they may not share the same bloodline? These adopted children need loving homes, who is to say that a a same sex home cannot provide that? What exactly are the reasons t hat our society still has inhibitions when it comes to allowing same sex couple to adopt? This paper aims to look at the arguments both for and against same sex adoptions with the full intention of providing factual information that will prove that allowing same sex adoptions will prove beneficial to the child and therefore, should be legally allowed across the United States. Let me begin this discussion by presenting the con side of the argument. These arguments range from psychological in nature, all the way to religious defenses. Whatever the argument presented, these non-supporters of the gay adoption cause do so on the same grounds, they are little informed and truly homophobic in nature which is why they are opposed to the love of a same sex couple being shared with a child who wants nothing more than the same. Politicians such as the United Kingdom's Independence party candidate Winston McKenzie has declared that gay adoption should be likened to child abuse and is a violatio n of a child's human rights. Mr. McKenzi claims that there is an abuse of the child's rights because; â€Å"that child has no opportunity to grow up under normal circumstances... There are people out there who bring up their kids encouraging them to believe they are gay themselves. † (Chorley. Matt â€Å"Allowing Gay Couples to Adopt Is a Form of Child Abuse, Says UKIP Election Candidate). It is important to note that Mr. McKenzie is a Christian with anti-gay sentiments therefore same sex adoption was against his religious beliefs. Aside from religious points of view such as Mr. McKenzie's the cause for gay adoption was not helped by the June 29 news that gay father Frank Lombard sexually molested his 5 year old adopted son. Reports coming from the Associated Press indicate that this is a disturbing trend that is emerging from a scientific literature about gay fathers. According to reports: â€Å"The Arrest Warrant documents that Lombard sodomized one of his two adopted Afr ican-American sons and made the boy give him oral sex on-line† (Cameron, Paul Dr. â€Å"Lombard Demonstrates Why Gays Should Not Be Allowed to Adopt†). The main fear of the psychological community is that children in same sex adopted homes are dangerously exposed to child molestation due to the queer lifestyle of the adopted parents. In the peer-reviewed Psychological Reports journal, Dr. Paul Cameron of the

A question of motivation Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

A question of motivation - Case Study Example Motivation can also make newly employed workers grasp the operations of an organization quickly. The case study involves conflict between Alex, a worker and Dan, his supervisor. Alex becomes bored for being allocated the same job every day until he dislikes his responsibility. Every day, Dan allocates Alex to arrange and fill shelves with apples to maintain the stock. Denise also works under the supervision of Dan, but does different work in the same store. In spite the fact that both Alex and Denise work under Dan and that Alex does more work than, and have even stayed in the organization longer than Denise, Alex receives lower pay than Denise. Still in the same organization but in different sector, Stephanie an employ who works under the supervision of Jonathan sell truffle oil that earns her good income and bonus when she delivers beyond certain expectations. In the organization, workers view Jonathan as one good supervisor whom everyone would desire to work with. Dan on the other hand is unfair in his dealings and seems to favor Denise at the expense of long serving Alex. Alex, working under the supervision of Dan is demoralized and lacks enthusiasm in his work. This is because Dan allocates him the same job every day with beliefs that someone works well when he practices the same job every day. Just like his colleague Denise who also works under the supervision of Dan, Alex feels that he should do different tasks for different days apart from stocking apples on the shelves.

Massachusetts v. EPA Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Massachusetts v. EPA - Research Paper Example Believing that global warming is one of the most threatening environmental challenges of its time, the state’s government and private organizations filed a petition that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not carry out its responsibilities under the Clean Air Act. Further arguments were made on the issue that EPA was supposed to regulate the greenhouse gases under the Act which stated that the Congress should regulate ‘any air pollutant’ that can ‘reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare.  The petitioners asked the court to answer some specific questions related to the issue. They were concerned about the statutory authority that EPA holds to regulate the emissions of greenhouse gases from the new motor vehicles, and if they do whether their reasons of refusing are consistent with the statute or not. EPA denied the petition and claimed that the Clean Air Act does not suggest that the Agency should regulate the emissions of the greenhouse gases. EPA further argues that even if the Clean Air Act did authorize these gases to be regulated by the Agency, they will wait for more research that could be done on the causes, and the significance of climate change and the potential options for addressing it.  The questions that came out, in this case, were many and this case was a tipping point in the history as to clarify the authorities of the EPA towards the state. The first question that came forward was that whether the EPA should decline to issue the emission standards for new motor cars based on the policy considerations which were not enumerated in the Clean Air Act. And the other question that was brought out, in this case, was the real issue under which the court had to make a decision and this was that does the Clean Air Act give the authority to the Agency to regulate carbon dioxide and the other greenhouse gases.

Essentials of Strategic Management Research Paper

Essentials of Strategic Management - Research Paper Example They offer an online service of renting movies whereby one has to subscribe. There are subscription fees that are usually paid on a monthly basis. Most of the industries that embrace technology, more so electronics, are known to be very competitive. This is the same case with rental industries where Netflix is facing stiff competition from some other organizations like Blockbuster who are offering almost the same services. Netflix has to lay down critical strategies that will help it to retain its position in the movie industry. There is a need to have a fertile basis of technology to ensure that they are able to cope up with technology that is changing at the speed of lightning (Barringer, 2010). Thesis Statement Rental industry is one of the risky businesses to venture into because of some reasons. The main reason is that it deals with the technological skills that you employ and how. An organization may make any cash from this trading while another one may incur high losses at the same time. This paper will look at some essential ways and methods that can be employed in this business. It will be based on a sample case study of Netflix, which is one of the successful tradings in the industries. As managers of other organizations in the industry, what would be important to consider being successful? Improvements do not come up abruptly thus there is a procedure that must be followed to the latter to get to that better place. This is only through proper planning and proper research. All the companies in this strategy have their own marketing structure that ought to be structured in accordance with changes in the market and technology. All this will be analyzed in depth with regard to Netflix (Olsen, 2011). Netflix Current Situation As compared to other companies in this industry, Netflix has the highest number of subscribers. The sales that are done on a daily basis are high however at times they have been observed to be low. The market structure is therefore n ot constant. In 2002, a case study carried out showed that there were around 190,000 discs sold per day to the 670, 000 subscribers. This number of subscribers grew from that number to around 8.4 million at the end of 2008. Currently, the number of customers is estimated to be 23 million. The company is the highest selling in America covering over 75% of the continent. The company has not yet ventured to other business places apart from America however it has some plans that are still cooking to venture into United Kingdom (Olsen, 2011). The subscription fee in this industry, usually on a monthly basis has been changing but the range is between $4.99 and $17.99. The main reason that this has been changing is the fluctuations of the subscription fee in other rental companies more so Blockbuster who has been working hard to ensure that their subscription fee is below that of Netflix. To fight the changing monthly subscription fees, the company set a one percent deduction fee on the to tal based on the overall annual fee. There are also Netflix plans in place for people to rent many DVDs will get a reduction in the total. This company is offering rental services online; people can also watch movies online, together with TV shows. Online streaming is aimed at getting users who rely on other electronics apart from computers, for instance, iPod users, and smartphones users.

Relationship Issue on Facebook Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Relationship Issue on Facebook - Research Paper Example Communication in relationships used to be based on letters and phone calls, and face-to-face interaction was more common, one could only meet new people face to face or by introduction, say by a mutual friend. Over the last few years, the dynamics of relationships and interactions has paradigmatically changed since thanks to modern technology, one does not even have to leave their house or home to communicate or interact with someone. This social interaction has been enhanced and dominated by social networking sites, the leading ones being Facebook and twitter (Ayodele 2). People, especially the youth, have taken to social networks not only to communicate with their friends, but as make new ones. Many love relationships have also been formed and flourished online on these social networks; indeed, there are those who join Facebook with the sole intention of dating and finding love. While many of these relationships become successful, there are many more which end up in heartbreak and sometimes even tragically because even criminals and stalkers use the internet to lure their victims. Therefore, it is imperative that we consider several questions, such as if Facebook poses a threat to the security of already existing relationships. What motivates people to look for love in Facebook? Can Facebook be considered a realistic and practical way of starting and building relationships? This essay will focus on the last question; it shall discuss, argue and contest the appropriateness of Facebook as a facilitator for relationships by examining the issues that surround Facebook relationships. There are several issues that make Facebook a shaky setting for developing and growing relationships, one of this is the effect Facebook has on pre-existing relationships. Consider that two people are in a relationship and both happen to be friends on Facebook. One of them may join a group or make friends with a member of the opposite sex who might send suggestive messages or gifts to them. Bearing in mind that the line between innocent flirting and cheating might mean different things to different partners, a post on someone’s timeline may cause friction and result in the termination of a relationship (Ilana 878). In another situation, when couples that are friends on Facebook have a falling out or disagreement, one of them may update something about it on their page, and this can cause their partner to feel humiliated. Moreover, youths often use media and technology to promote sexual behavior through highly sexually suggestive messages and sometimes picture in what has been dubbed sexting (Pascoe 6). Facebook easily offers an avenue for this: when people are online, they are able to hide their shyness and will be bolder. This will encourage behavior such as flirting, which easily becomes serious and in some cases turns into full-blown sexting where people send each other suggestive or even nude pictures as well as explicit Messages. If people meet onlin e, they are likely to engage in such activity because lack of direct contact emboldens them; unfortunately, this makes deceit a common future in Facebook relationships (Ayodele 8). In case such an association was to develop in to relationship, two people may move from being friends to being on sexting terms before they have even met in person. Therefore, should they meet, they are likely to engage in sexual activity without knowing much about each other ergo risking contacting sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, AIDS, herpes and others. Facebook has been accused of spoiling relationships, especially long distance ones. This is because while Facebook offers an avenue

Experiment to Determine the Coefficient of Friction

Experiment to Determine the Coefficient of Friction Student Name: Ahmad Raza Summary: This experiment has two aims. The first aim of this experiment is to determine the coefficient of friction on an inclined plane by using various materials tray. Secondly, to verify that the force have already found which were required to move a body on an inclined plane. We have provided apparatus to do this experiment that include stainless steel plane, load hanger, different weights and 4 trays of different materials such as aluminium, brass, nylon and ferado. Firstly, we place tray at the middle of plane and apply weight on weight hanger until tray starts to move. Note the angle and find the coefficient of friction. For this purpose we have found the Normal force and sliding. Then, by using formula of coefficient of friction we found the value, which was approximately 0.18 at 10Â °, 20Â ° and 30Â °. Nevertheless, the additional 10N weight was added but the friction coefficient but the angle will remain same. The experiment was taken by under good circumstances. However, errors can be reduce by overlapping the mistake that was take place in this experiment. This experiment could be done exactly the same as international standard if the following conditions apply on it. CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION AIMS AND OBJECTIVE The aims of the friction experiment are to find the coefficient of different combination of material which is in this experiment, the steel bar. Making use of inclined plane, also to study equilibrium and non-equilibrium of a body of an incline plane under the action of the force. The objective is to understand that a coefficient of friction could be determine via incline plane, collect experiment data and calculate the corresponding results and coefficient and finally to compare the value of coefficient generated from different pairs of surface. 1.2: THEORY AND BACKGROUND: Friction can be defined as the force that will resists the relative motion of solid surfaces which are sliding against each other. There are mainly three types of friction. Dry friction, Fluid friction and internal friction but this particular experiment was just examined only for dry friction. Dry friction is the encountered when two dry surfaces are in convention if there is a tendency of sliding. However this dry friction has split into two sub frictions as static and kinetic. Commonly, kinetic frictional force will be less than the absolute maximum value from the static frictional force. This static frictional force is derived as fs = ÃŽ ¼sN, while kinetic frictional force is fk =ÃŽ ¼kN, where ÃŽ ¼s is the coefficient of static friction, ÃŽ ¼k is the coefficient of kinetic friction, N is the normal force and ÃŽ ¼ is the proportionality constant and called coefficient of friction. An inclined plane can be defined as any plane surface positioned at an angle with respect to the horizontal plane. At the moment of sliding, the friction force must be the same to the element of weight acting down the plane. ÃŽ ¼W .cosÃŽ ¸ =W .sinÃŽ ¸ This leads to the concept of the angle of the friction ÃŽ ¼ = tanÃŽ ¸ CHAPTER 2 APPRATUS AND experimental procedure 2.1: APPRATUS: Adjustable stainless steel plane complete with base .5N load hanger Weights Trays of Aluminium, Brass, Nylon and Ferado Fig1.1: Wood plane and trays 2.2: experimental procedure: As we discussed above, we have two aims for this experiment. Each aim has different procedure. 2.2.1: Following procedure is to find the angle of friction on a steel plane by using different materials. We have given four trays for this experiment such as Aluminium, Brass, Nylon and Ferado. First of all set the plane of stainless steel at 0 slope by ensuring that it is in horizontal plane. Afterward, set the tray of any material at the middle of stainless steel plane then apply weight at the end of plane by weight hanger and note the angle of inclination when tray starts to slide. Take coefficient of Tan ÃŽ ¸ to evaluate static deflection (ÃŽ ¼s).Repeat the same procedure three times and take the average. Subsequently, to evaluate the angle of sliding friction (ÃŽ ¼k) , place the tray again in the middle of plane and reduce the tilt as this time tilt was increased, we keep pushing the tray till it started to move and note the angle for three times and take the average. Static deflection (ÃŽ ¼s) Measure angle ÃŽ ¸ for static deflection by using Aluminium tray Table 1.1: Aluminium tray Measure angle ÃŽ ¸ for static deflection by using Brass tray Table 1.2: Brass tray Measure angle ÃŽ ¸ for static deflection by using Nylon tray Table 1.3: Nylon tray Measure angle ÃŽ ¸ for static deflection by using Ferado tray Table 1.4: Ferado tray Sliding Friction (ÃŽ ¼k) Measure angle ÃŽ ¸ for sliding friction by using Aluminium tray Table 2.1: Aluminium tray Measure angle ÃŽ ¸ for sliding friction by using Brass tray Table 2.2: Brass tray Measure angle ÃŽ ¸ for sliding friction by using Nylon tray Table 2.3: Nylon tray Measure angle ÃŽ ¸ for sliding friction by using Ferado tray Table 2.4: Ferado tray 2.2.2: Following procedure is to verify the force required parallel to an inclined plane to move a body up the plane corresponds to the friction coefficient already found. First of all set the stainless steel plane horizontally at 10 slope. Place the towing cord and weight hanger in position to pull the tray up to the plane by placing any material tray at the lower end of plane. Add load to the hanger until the tray, given a slide push, slides slowly up the plane. Repeat the same procedure by applying 10N weight at angle 20 and 30. CHAPTER 3 CALCULATIONS AND RESULTS 3.1: Procedure 1 As we found angle above, now to find coefficient of static deflection, take tan ÃŽ ¸. For Aluminium (Tan15.8) = 0.28 For Brass (Tan14) = 0.25 For Nylon (Tan20) = 0.36 For Ferado (Tan18.8) = 0.34 Table 3.1: Coefficient of static deflection As we found angle above, now to find the coefficient of sliding friction, take tan ÃŽ ¸. For Aluminium (Tan10.8) = 0.19 For Brass (Tan15.1) = 0.27 For Nylon (Tan12.3) = 0.22 For Ferado (Tan13.7) = 0.24 Table 3.1: Coefficient of sliding friction Procedure 2: First of all find the normal force Normal Force = W.cosÃŽ ¸ Normal Force = 3.58.cos10Â ° Normal Force = 3.52 N Secondly find the Sliding force Sliding Force = p-(W.sinÃŽ ¸) Sliding Force = 1.2-(3.58.sin10Â °) Sliding Force = 0.58 N Now as we have both normal and sliding force, we can find Friction Coefficient ÃŽ ¼ Friction Coefficient = Sliding force / Normal force Friction Coefficient = 0.58 / 3.52 Friction Coefficient = 0.16 All the values were measured for angle 20Â ° and 30Â ° as shown in the table below. Table 4.1: Nevertheless, the additional 10N weight were added but the friction coefficient and angle will remain same as shown above in the table which proves that weight cannot change the angle and coefficient of friction. By converting mass of the tray into weight we can prove the experiment. W = mg W = 0.365*9.81 W = 3.58 N CHAPTER 4 ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION Subsequently investigation in the data, we all observed that hypothesis is true, where the static along with kinetic friction is usually affected by the mass of body. The coefficient in the kinetic along with static friction is determined by materials used for each call surfaces. The coefficients will never always be bigger than 1 and the coefficient connected with kinetic friction is definitely more compact as opposed to among static friction for that identical scenario. The value of coefficient of friction is 0.18.The laboratory on the other hand, we all would come up with a vibrant mistake thats produced each of our kinetic friction importance unfeasible, as the importance for we all received ended up being caused by the tension pulling on the block. However, there were some systematic error occur while doing experiment. These errors were arisen due to string and hanger as they were not straight and each group member have different value while taking reading. CHAPTER 5 CONCLUSION The experiment was taken under good circumstances. However, errors can be reduce by overlapping the mistake that was take place in this experiment. This experiment could be done exactly the same as international standard if the following conditions apply on it. First of all make sure that the hanging masses do not move while adding additional weight on load hanger. This experiment will be really useful in the future to determine the coefficient of friction for different materials. REFERENCE: John, B Carl,T.F.T.F. Ross (2002).Mechanical Engineering Principles. Hippy Movement :: essays research papers

Hippy Movement Through out history the world has seen some generations that have made an impact more than all of its predecessors. The decade from1960 to 1970 was definitely one of those eras. The people didn't follow the teachings of its elders, but rejected them for an alternative culture which was their very own(Harris 14). Made up of the younger population of the time this new culture was such a radical society that they were given their own name which is still used today. They came to be called the Hippies. The Hippie movement started in San Francisco, California and spread across the United States, through Canada, and into parts of Europe (World Book). But it had its greatest influence in America. During the 1960's a radical group called the Hippies shocked America with their alternative lifestyle and radical beliefs. Hippies came from many different places and had many different backgrounds. All Hippies were young, from the ages of 15 to 25 (Worldbook). They left their families and did it for many different reasons. Some rejected their parents' ideas, some just wanted to get away, and others simply were outcasts, who could only fit in with the Hippie population. "Under 25 became a magical age, and young people all over the world were united by this bond" (Harris 15). This bond was of Non-conformity and it was the "Creed of the Young" (Harris 15). Most Hippies came from wealthy middle class families. Some people said that they were spoiled and wasting their lives away. But to Hippies themselves this was a way of life and no one was going to get in the way of their dreams and ambitions. Hippies flocked to a certain area of San Francisco on the corner of Haight Street and Ashbury Street, where the world got their first view of this unique group. This place came to be known as the Haight Ashbury District. There were tours of the district and it was said that the tour "was the only foreign tour within the continental limits of the United States" (Stern 147). The Hippies were so different that the conservative middle class could not relate to them and saw them as aliens. The Haight Ashbury district lies in the very center of San Francisco. In the years of 1965 and 1966 the Hippies took over the Haight Ashbury district(Cavan 49). There they lived and spread their

Technology Addicts :: Technological Communication Essays

Technology Addicts Five empty chairs form a circle in the center of the room. Slowly but surely, people begin to make their way into the room. A young man dressed in a black suit sits down with his Newsweek and briefcase. He adjusts his tie, clears his throat, and pushes his wire-rimmed glasses up onto the bridge of his nose. A teenage girl sits down beside him, tucking blonde strands of hair behind her ears to reveal tiny white headphones attached to her iPod. She crosses her right leg over the left, tapping her foot in mid-air to the beat. The worn wooden door creaks open again, slamming shut behind a twenty-something carrying a thin silver laptop computer. He slouches down into the chair with an exasperated sigh and begins to type furiously at the keyboard. The businessman glares over the top of his glasses at him when the familiar chimes of instant messaging become as frequent as the taps of the keys. The young man continues, oblivious to his surroundings. The clock on the wall ticks closer to seven o'clock as the last two people amble in. A middle-aged woman sits down with her knitting, occasionally stopping to jot notes in the sleek PDA beside her. Finally, a woman with a clipboard comes through the door and takes her seat, completing the circle. She clears her throat and begins. "Good evening, and welcome to group therapy. Let's go over the ground rules: First no technology allowed at meetings. Put away your iPod, laptops, PDAs, etc. RIGHT NOW. And don't bring them back to these meetings or they will be confiscated." The group members scowl as they slowly wind up wires. "My only other rule is that you participate. You won't get anything out of group therapy if you don't put anything into it. Let's begin." * * * What would our lives be like if technology were our life support? We would probably not be able to go an entire day without emails, instant messaging, or the World Wide Web. Cell phones might as well be permanently attached to our ears.

Building a Strategic Balanced Scorecard

The balanced scorecard has been said to be among the most important tools in business management (Kaplan, R. S (2003), PR Newswire (2003). The usage of balanced scorecard by several companies has led to increase in profitability, productivity and efficiency. The strategic balanced scorecard has been used by organizations to balance all aspects of organizational practice by providing a framework for effecting change and translating strategy into action. It has for sometime gained acceptance as a way of turning around businesses which were at one time in the brink of collapse (Kerr, D.  L. 2003). The scorecard has facilitated the translation of strategy into action (Kaplan, R. S. , and D. P. Norton 1992). In corporate organizations, is the case with Saatchi and Saatchi, the scorecard has helped many companies out of crisis. In the nineties this organization called Saatchi and Saatchi was experiencing many problems associated with poor growth. This was due to a recession that followed t he rapid growth through acquisitions in the 1970’s and 80’s. Particularly in 1995 this organization was almost collapsing due to bankruptcy. To avert the collapse the agency started with strategy reformulation and making some structural changes that began with bringing onboard new personnel at the top to the organization. Bob Seelert who formerly worked at General Foods was appointed as the new chairman and Kevin Roberts as the new chief Executive, while both the Saatchi brothers left the company. With the new leadership in place several financial goals were developed. These goals were: i. Growing the company’s revenue base better than the market. ii.Converting 30 percent of that incremental revenue to operating profit. iii. Doubling the company’s earnings per share. These goals were given as a promise of performance to the shareholders and thus had to be achieved. To achieve them, the leadership of the organization identified ways in which the goals could be achieved and in doing this it was found that all units or locations had different visions. For smooth accomplishment of the goals, all units had to have a common vision. A management tool had to be devised to help communicate and operationalize the new vision.Having a common vision was perceived to aid in achieving of one of the main objectives which was to position the agency at the top rank of the advertising industry. ANALYSIS The importance of measuring strategy and operational plans cannot be overemphasized (Green et al. 2002). After setting up financial/growth goals the company’s senior team focused and had to re-prioritize their investment plans for the different units. First the units had to be categorized according to their size in terms of the number of employees and also revenue contribution. Using the above criteria three categories were created. These were the ‘lead’, ‘drive’ and ‘prosper’. For each category different str ategies were formulated. The ‘prosper’ agency is the one with less than 50 employees and is less likely to become a huge agency. Most agencies fall into the ‘prosper’ category. The new strategic focus for this category was that units in it were expected to achieve high margins despite their failure to grow significantly. The other category is the ‘drive’ agency which is estimated to have between 50 and 150 employees. The strategy adopted for it was that it had to maintain or slightly grow its revenue base, not leaving out growth in margins. The ‘lead’ agency is the one in which majority units are located and is the largest with examples being the UK, New York and China. This agency was expected to post rapid growth and also is the one where the biggest share of investment would be allocated. Apart from strategies directed to the different agency categories, Saatchi and Saatchi adopted other strategies relating to a customer perspect ive. One was paying close attention to the agency’s core client base. This strategy calls for treating the customers well in order for them to love the company i. e.to infatuate them. For this Saatchi and Saatchi came up with what they called are having ‘permanently infatuated clients’ or PIC for short. The other strategy which was encouraging employees to come up with big ideas which were referred to as ‘big fabulous ideas’ or BFIs. The BFIs were supposed to be quality ideas that could change businesses, brands and reputations to Saatchi and Saatchi’s clients. CONCLUSION The strategy for the ‘prosper’ agency of achieving high margins was possible through treating the few customers excellently i. e. making them infatuated. Also the employees in this agency were given opportunity to give quality ideas which were supported by financing from the top management. The ‘drive’ agency charged with responsibility of maintaining or slightly growing their revenue base and growing their margins also achieved their goals through being supported financially by the top management. The agency given the ‘lead’ status which comprised the largest revenue base, such as the UK, New York and China received the lion’s share of investment. As a result this category grew rapidly with the scorecard as the way through which strategy was translated into action within Saatchi and Saatchi.Key success was achieved through the absolute commitment of the most senior management that gave the required resources. EVALUATION For the case of Saatchi and Saatchi Company a set of two strategies were meshed together. These were the financial and customer perspective strategies which worked together reinforcing one another. The reasons which support this position are that in the goal of generating more revenue, more attention was paid to the clients who gave large earnings. On the other hand the goal pf converting 30 percent of the incremental revenue to operating profit was meant to finance changes in the organization. This was through encouraging employees to come up with quality ideas, by giving them incentives and rewards for quality ideas. Finally, the financial goal of doubling earnings per share was achieved through implementation of PICS’ (permanently infatuated clients) hence increasing growth and achieving high margins from clients who love and stick to the company. Also the financial goal of encouraging development of big ideas which could transform business, brands reputation of the company’s clients, was related to the customer perspective strategy. In the impudent bodacious naked(a) military creation by Aldous Huxley, unmatchable of the chief(prenominal) char coiffeers that is presented to the readers is Bernard Marx. What this characters name brings to the chief of the reader, and surely the in ten-spottion too of the author, is the diachronic figure Karl Marx who wrote the contain Communist Manifesto. In the book, Bernard Marx is described as a soporific specialist at the Hatchery and Conditioning decoct in the modern domain. This is the cont check why he is get holdn as preposterous by the stack j ust about him (Huxley 38). As the refreshful progresses, the reader sympathises Bernard Marx as a l wiz(a)r and un contented. The social group that he moves around with unwraps him as a maverick and a non-conformist. He questions the system of the introduction secernate and wants to fight for his individuality. In some regimen agencys, he is watchn as someone who al rooms wants to go against the system. This dispelicipative spot of Bernard Marx in the forward-looking confederacy go out exclusively changed when dis regardful ref recitations to be part of his agenda. The reader sees again that Marx returns to his old, protestor panache. The knowledge base concealler sees that he has not changed and in the end he is thrown out of the introduction State to be deported to Iceland (Huxley 98). What force out we see then in the character of Bernard Marx? We poop conclude then that the protest bearing of him is not borne out of intellectual or of clean-living form in origin. The trump term that we can see to it is that his act of his organism a non-conformist among his social group originates from a personal and social one.I set up this conclusion to the nature of his character since his organismness alone surely must provoke stemmed from his macrocosm short as an Alpha. As mentioned above, Alphas ar designed to be tall but Marx is not. His manifestation of being a protestor comes from his anger of being not accredited fully by his peers, of being different from them. So in picture he sees no point of move in all the activities that be expected of his caste. When an opportunity is presented to him that he can be accepted and nevertheless become popular, his military capability towards the World State suddenly changed. mastery went fizzily to Bernards head, and in the mould in all harmonise him to a globe which, up work on then, he had found genuinely unaccept sufficient (Huxley 66). This opportunity is when he brings antic to Lon get into and quickly gains popularity (Huxley 66). Still, Marx goes back to his old guidances when the chance to become popular slips to his pass on upon Johns rejections of his agenda. In the end, he is deported to Iceland against his protests. The incorrupt of the character of Marx then is that he is a hypocrite in his being a non-conformists and critic of the ship canal of the World State. His criticism of the system in the parliamentary procedure that he lives in stems from the rejection he gets from his being physic ally different from his social group. We can thus sum up that the flaws that he sees in the World System are not genuine. The order of the World State pull up stakes be a taint as far as Marx is bear on up until he is not accepted as part of his social group. When this has changed it is exactly then that he can truly feel a part of the impudent hostelry. Works Cited Huxley, Aldous. Brave un handlingd World. immature York HarperCollins Publisher Inc. ,1998Brave rising World by Aldous HuxleyThe Brave new-fangled World, scripted by Aldous Huxley, is an extemporary legend that mint candys with moral problems like the problem of how to achieve gaiety in the best possible way. The invention includes the poignant role of the political sympathies activity in achieving this finis and the turn overbacks it can create in a society. This paper will exhaustively discuss both side of the moral problem and how it affected the society as a whole. much often than not, a novel is a little variation and pictureal of an authors life, experiences and knowledge. It would be hard not to incorporate his/her own opinions and panoramas inside his/her work.An author can go as far as draw sound descents to defend his/her point, and all this can be easily do by describing his/her characters, the setting, plot, and so on. Aldous Huxley started writing the Brave New world in 193, and by that time, proficient innovations as well as world-changing til nowts were fetching place, and society was at its chalk up train over. From its primitive way of life, the world was developing and advancing to a modernistic and wholly modern era. The event as a whole didnt escaped the maintenance of Huxley, and all of this, no doubt, affected him, and resulted in one of the intimately powerful, thought provoking novels. His visualization of the world in the pricey future, maybe decades or centuries from the time he wrote his work, gave deep insight of the unfavorable woul d-be(prenominal) lifestyle of the world, which may not be so far from todays way of life. It is Huxleys ability to portray the future that uses his current observations that made his novel a classic, affecting not only the tribe of his time, but to a fault the latter societies. Inside the book, Huxley introduced a moral problem. He presented a society that was under the total power of a manipulative governing body.Due to forward-looking scientific techniques, mountain live in constant blessedness. Here Huxley wanted his readers to see an important question, should the state of happiness be the prime goal of mankind, or should spare will, at the expense of contentment, be the key. The Brave New Worlds administration chose the former, to defy its people happy eon ensuring constancy. It was the director in the novel who explained the mechanics of the World State. He explained that tremendous union of conditioning is requisite to unfold the underground of happiness, and th at you must like what you are doing.Making people like both their pursuit and the way of life the government wants them to do is the goal of all the conditioning. One of the defining moments of the novel was when the lead character, John, entered the story. The other side of the argument was brought into account. John, who came from a very different society, sees the World State in a very different way. Because he had grown up in a society where the government doesnt have total control over its citizen, he sees how the citizens were denied of the truth of literature, history, emotion, and most of all, com wrathateity. It was when he met the world leader, Mustapha Mond, that he was able to adamantly point his observations. But even though he understood Johns view, the leader refused to listen and go on to argue that it must be done in order to achieve happiness and perceptual constancy. These aspects are untold more than important compared to humanity, the leader continued. He i nsists that social perceptual constancy requires the sacrifice of the things John value. As long as people are happy everything will be fine. John protests that, without these things, human life is not worth living, even with happiness.Mond explains that the governments plan is foolproof, with the process of soma, a drug that offers a way to deal with unpleasant emotions that lead to inefficiency and conflict, and keep people from movementing to change the way they live. As everyone knows, utopias strive to work as perfection therefore it is completely necessary for these societies to have moral value. The society in Brave New World privations values like promiscuity, over- cosmos, use of drugs, and elimination of holiness and family, creating a Dystopia. During the entire novel, Huxley fathers evident that these values are missing in the society. As a peculiar characteristic the World State eliminates the word family. This word doesnt represent for the people anymore, meaning that there are no parents or siblings a person is created in an assembly line in mass production, creating 96 persons in one blow (Huxley, 6). This civilized society lives in a world where perception and technology play an important role. Religion is replaced with beau ideal does not exist anymore (Huxley, 230). alternatively of attending church on Sundays, people attend to services where morals are not defineed at all. They vertical get accustomed to having sexual communion or taking soma. The government not only controls how one thinks, but it withal controls ones physical benefit to his society. By genetically engineering ones body, the government can devil it infinitely useful to itself. To crystalise that one body feel no pain, to make the soul feel like it belongs to the society, and to make the mind open to any ideas is a vital asset for this government. The people are not always worried active death and can always slow in this utopian society since other people p leasure them, and with a society of happy people, the government never fears a revolt. One aspect of control that is touched upon from the bloodline of the novel until the end is the control of the population birth and growth. As a way to maintain the societys saw of Community, Identity and Stability, the number of inhabitants is managed through the artificiality of the hold out smart worlds use of technology. In the first chapter of the novel, the reader is introduced to the process of creating gentleman in this Utopia. The fact that machines do what is done by human procreative systems shows how scholarship has dominated over man in this world. The actual process of creating humans is made possible through the use of a single ovary, which makes thousands of identical people. Since these people are similar in appearance, thought and relations, they are able to live in perfect harmony with each other. Huxley uses Lenina and Fanny, cardinal of his female characters who are dista nt relatives from the kindred ovary, as people who get along well and are on the same page on issues concerning Utopian lifestyles. This is how the government of Utopia, made up of only ten controllers, is able to maintain stability among its people.Since stability is part of the defy new worlds motto, it is a crucial deal for the government to uphold. Something else that is controlled by government and science is any thing to do with marriage, dawdle and pregnancy. It is a rule by the government for everyone to freely have sex with anybody at anytime they want. It is against the rules of the Utopia to date anyone regularly. political sympathies forbids anyone to go towards thoughts of monogamy and romance because they require too oft time and bring no stability to life.Science controls the aspect of pregnancy in the way that females have to wear contraceptive belts season having endless sex to avoid any pregnancy. Pregnancy is controlled because it brings pain and goal of th e brave new world is to have happiness. Government and science restrain Utopias citizens from what is part of being human. In Brave New World, there are no feelings and emotions whatsoever because they are refused by the dominating power which gives out the soma that allows people to do whatever they please without being nefarious astir(predicate) it.But they live their lives with ignorance. Lastly, literature is some other characteristic that makes this society a dystopia. It is completely banned for anyone to read because it brings ideas to people, creating individual. They are more focused in a society that consumes and every time is buying new things. Even Mustapha Mond, one of the new worlds 7 controllers, admits that the world they inhabit is far from perfect. Mond says to John those who have the ability to write the laws also have the ability to break them (Huxley, 248).Even the cardinal controllers of the World State break the rules by reading books. It is evident tha t even though they want to create a new world where the past is completely forgotten, they hushed want to read and learn. The truth is that by knowing about the past societies learn to not make the same mistakes again. much of Huxleys vision is already globe today. We are already seeing the instruction of the fundamental principles evident in the novel with things like cloning, government control, drugs to make us happier, and being a consumer based society. Now, when a scientific breakthrough is discovered, people will refer to us coming hand-to-hand to the brave new world. We are more conscious of changes that technology brings upon us and try to recognize its potential threats. This is the reason why there are always oppose groups of certain advancements, trying to see not only the pros but also the cons of new technology. Huxley therefore hasnt so much aided in the creation of new technologies, instead he has made us guarded or worried about these advancements. The book helpe d the population see a future, which may not be so appealing, compared to many other futuristic novels, which visualised a much happier lifestyle. Huxleys upbringing, along with the world events going on around him, was contributory in some ways to the writing of Brave New World. More significantly however, are the effects the book has had on modern society. Not so much, that people have consciously interpreted ideas from the book and tried to implement them, more that the ideology has served as a caliber against which we judge the advents of technology. In conclusion, science has become a major part of this modern life. In Brave New World, Huxley predicts a world dominated by government and science and how the two aspects influence humanity. Although I lack the understanding of a society of this New State, I can picture out what might happen to the world if the government makes this drastic operation. I can see a world deprived of passion and love. Everything movement is mechanica l. Every matchion will create confusion. I can see them asking themselves, how will I react when I accidentally do something aggrieve? How will I love someone? The questions somewhat made me laugh, but at the same time made me sad. The search of having the same fate as anyone else frightens me. Its as if well all be conceal inside the same caskets. I dont like the idea at all. And by creating people massively, it automatically eliminates individuality. Parents are not necessary to raise a person, but they are actually wrong. program line starts at home, something very true in the real world. So if there isnt any home or family, how can a person be raised to be a well-mannered magnanimous? Reference Huxley, A. (1975). Brave New World. Markham, Ontario

There are numerous reasons why I hold my points of view on this issue and I would same(p) to explore only a a couple of(prenominal) primary ones in this essay. The first drawback I would like to talk about is that computers make people tempestuous time kind of of doing useful things.Nobody laughingstock turn down that computers bring about a variety of benefits for our life, with the protagonist of computer our work bewilder easier and more effective. On the other hand, computers can make students neglect their studies. They can spend so many hours on computer games or social interlocking that they have no time for their studies, or even when they are world i n class, they may not pay perplexity to the lesson. One thing which is equally important is that employ computer in addition much, people are for certain harm to their health.Gazing at a screen of a computer, people easily have eye sieve without suitable relaxing. Furthermore, electro-magnetic waves from computers excise peoples tense systems, which is the reason why people have business organization after using computer for a desire time. Finally, computers may affect peoples thoughts and characteristics. This event can lead peoples attitudes and behaviors to be bob up bad. Otherwise, computers make people can not configuration their confidence when they get into reality.
